ABOUT ST
TERESA OF AVILA
I too am called to a life of perfection... |
She was born in 1515, in Avila, Spain. Her mother died when
she was twelve and her father placed her in convent of Augustinian nuns. When
she returned home, she made up her mind to enter religion. So, she became nun
in the Carmelite convent of the Incarnation near her natal town. Teresa led a good life in convent, even
though certain faults still adhered to her, but she, at a point, experienced
the grace of God, and her heart began to soar upward to perfection. Assisted by St. John of the cross, she
succeeded in establishing the reform of the Discalced Carmelites, both for the
brethren and the sisters of her order. Before her death in 1582, thirty-two
monasteries of the Reformed Rule had been established, among which seventeen
convents of nuns. She also wrote many books on mystical Theology
considered by popes Gregory XV and Urban VII to be equal to those of a doctor
of the church. So accordingly, on September 27, 1970, pope Paul VI added her to
the role of Doctor of the Church.
MY
MOTIVATION
My motivation to chose this book, comes from the fact
that, Saint Teresa, filled by the spirit of God, was able to manifest to the
church the way of perfection. And as Christian, I am called to live a life that
leads to Perfection. And in this book, St Teresa gives some guide lines which
are necessary for the one who desire to take the way of perfection: love of
prayer, fraternal love, detachment from creating things, and true humility. As
a future pastor, I think this books will help me to be a good priest in future.
